Hyperpigmentation refers to any condition that has more than the normal amount of melanin. Lentigo, commonly known as age spots, occurs when there is an uneven local accumulation of melanin deposits in the epidermal surface layers. Melasma, or local hyperpigmentation, results when the melanocytes produces a greater amount of melanin in a given area of the skin. Melasma may occur as a result of hormonal imbalances caused by pregnancy, birth control pills, menopause, or nervous disorders. Dark spots can also be the result of surface irritation of the skin as those caused by acne conditions. But the sun is one of the worst causes of hyperpigmentation on the face and hands. Individuals who are prone to developing hyperpigmentation must be consistent in the use of sun block. This type of person has a tendency to be sun worshipper, and should be informed that continued sun bathing without routine use of sunscreen will only aggravate melanin production.
